Artist open house and holiday sale in Geneva set for Thanksgiving weekend

GENEVA, NY – Find memorable, artistic gifts for everyone on your list at Flying Whale Studios & Friends’ 3rd annual Artist Open House and Holiday Sale, featuring original creations from over thirty artists and craftspeople from throughout the region, Thanksgiving weekend, Nov. 28-30, 2014, at 143 William St.

Hours are 5 - 8 p.m. on Friday, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. on Saturday and 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. on Sunday.

Kevin and Mary Schoonover, of Flying Whale Studios, open their Greek Revival home for three days of shopping in an intimate, friendly setting. Six downstairs rooms at Flying Whale Landing will be filled with a wide variety of eclectic arts and crafts, from the whimsical to the practical — including holiday decorations and fine art photography, Pysanky eggs, handmade soaps and glass jewelry, paper, pottery and primitives, steel sculpture, wooden cutting boards, decadent desserts, pillows, stuffed monsters, up-cycled mittens, and locally sourced honey and beeswax candles.
“If you’re looking for a fun and funky alternative to the malls and big box stores this Thanksgiving, then this is the place to be. We're bigger and better than ever," said Kevin, who opened Flying Whale Studios five years ago, specializing in photography and graphic design. “We have such a great time putting this together each year – juggling artists and their unique visions, rearranging to accommodate all the goodies, and welcoming the enthusiastic patrons into our home.”

Participating artists are: Beachcomber Designs (Lisa Johnson), Cedar Pottery (Chris Schnaufer), Chancery Lane Primitives (Sandie Fogle), Cherie Carter Designs, Deborah Bly, Dumpster Bunny Designs (Kristen Curley), Erin Makes Stuff (Erin Busch), Foster’s Frostings (Scott Foster), Flying Whale Studios (Kevin & Mary Schoonover), Gio's Designs (Julia O’Connor), Hand Candy Mittens (Charlotte Reid Besaw), Honey Bee Creations (Melissa Foppes), JK Stitches (Jean Keane), Karen Rothfuss Cloth Bowls, Etc., Kathleen A. Kosel Steelworks, Knit Creations by Judith Treisback, L Prince Designs Art Jewelry (Lori Prince), Ladies of the Lake (Dale Mangan), Lisa B. Contemporary Folk Art (Lisa Bystrak), Peaches Products (Casey Wright), Pine Tree Designs (Stefani Tadio), PS Enjoy Your Life (Jen Born), The Purple Hippo (Tracy Morrall), Pysanky by Mia (Mia Sohn), Rusty Button Studio (Missy Buckley), Sage Studios (Sage Churchill-Foster), Secondseed (Nancy Topolski), Stone Foliage (Kathy Sullivan), Tom Zachman Fused Glass, Urban Turning (Sam Tischler), Waid’s Honey & Candles (Duane Waid), and Woods Edge Studio (Sara Senour).

Billsboro Winery will conduct a complimentary wine tasting Friday night from 6-8 p.m.

"I look forward to this all year. Kevin and Mary open their house in the truest holiday spirit,” noted returning Rochester jeweler Lisa Johnson of Beachcomber Designs. "I know I can find beautiful, unique gifts for everyone."
Lori Prince of L Prince Designs Art Jewelry in Rochester added, "There is such a great selection of high quality, handmade goods being offered. Last year, I bought things for multiple people on my list. And for myself too, I couldn't resist.”
"The thing I like about this sale is that even with the returning artists, their work is always new & fresh,” declared paper artist Stefani Tadio from Pine Tree Designs in Fairport. "Kevin always mixes in a few new artists too. It’s a wonderfully curated event.” Tadio is the founder of Rochester Artisans, an online forum and resource for artists and craftspeople in the upstate New York area.
Eight artists are making their debuts at this year’s event including Erin Busch of Erin Makes Stuff in Buffalo. "I am super excited to bring my hand-knit monsters to Flying Whale Studios,” she said.

For all three days, admission is free and the browsing is easy. There also will be refreshments and prizes. All major credit cards will be accepted.

Thanks again to everyone who came out to the waterfront today! Many monsters found new homes. This is great news for me because now I have a reason to make more. I'd make more anyway, but it's fun to see people fall in love with their monster friend and take one home.

Here's a shot of the monsters. Yep, they were on TV again tonight! And yes, I'm dorky enough to sit there with my camera to take a picture of them!

The next show is August 11th. Same time. Same place. Come on down.

Buffalo's First Saturday Artist Market at the Central Wharf!

Hello all, especially anyone new stopping here after visiting today's S.A.M. Citybration event! I hope you thought the event was as much fun as I did! A bunch of monsters found new homes and the weather was perfect! The monsters even found some airtime tonight on Channel 4 News as some "local treasures of a different kind." How exciting is that!? I've never actually been on TV, but today I managed to stumble through a brief interview while shaking like a leaf. Here's some screenshots and the whole video can be found HERE.

See? The monsters just want to make you smile. Let's all be happy for a little while.

Thanks to everyone who came out to make this event super fun and successful! And if you missed it, there's MORE! The Saturday Artist Market is ongoing throughout the summer. I listed all the dates I'll be attending in the WHERE TO BUY tab up top.

Weekend Recap

Well, hi! That was one crazy weekend! Erinmakesstuff managed to be in two places at once! Let me start off with a huge THANK YOU to everyone who came out to support the UUCB Holiday Show in Buffalo and the Indie Garage Sale in Utica. SO MANY monsters found homes. There is hardly anything left in the bin! I would definitely do both shows again... but hopefully they don't happen on the same day next year! That was a wee bit STRESSFUL!

Sitting at these shows reminds me why I make these guys. Sometimes when I'm working I think, "What am I doing?!" Knitting is super time consuming and I'm probably crazy for picking that technique. But watching the "journey of emotions" on customers faces is priceless. [My friend Allison said that yesterday and I liked it.] It's rare for someone to not crack a smile, even if at first glance they seem puzzled. And that's all these monsters need to do: make you smile. Cheer you up. Laugh. Enjoy. They are as warm and cozy as your favorite sweater and each has a personality all their own. What more do you need?

[See that possum scarf? It found a home too! As did the big monstapus. Many customers returned Sunday to get even more monsters!]

To sweeten what was already an awesome weekend, I learned something else! The Utica O-D newspaper used pictures of my monsters with their article to advertise the Indie Garage Sale! On Saturday customers were passing by and kept commenting that they saw my stuff in the paper... and I had no idea what they were talking about. Fortunately my friend [and wonderful host! Thanks again Susan!] was able to dig through her parents recycle bin Sunday morning and find me a copy! Monsters were pictured on BOTH the cover and inside the Thursday weekend section! How cool is that! Pictured in the paper in two cities for two different shows within two months! [And both times I had no idea!] At least this time I managed to get a copy of the paper!

To end this post, THANK YOU to the wonderful people at the UUCB in Buffalo.  I'm sad I couldn't be there in person this time. Everyone who went said it was fantastic so congrats on a job well done!

Hi everyone! I just got back from an awesome show [Mayday Underground Arts + Crafts Show] at the Main Street Armory in Rochester! It was really fun introducing my monsters to another city and finding new fans. A big thank you to the lovely ladies who organized the show [I'll definitely be applying again for the spring!] And you know what else is cool? My monsters were pictured in City Newspaper! Here's a screenshot of their website.

So what's next? Next Sunday is the Art Garage Sale at Lovin' Cup in Henrietta, NY. The weekend after that is one of my FAVORITE shows: Women's Gifts! Check the "Where to Buy" tab at the top of this page for more details on those two shows... and all upcoming events. Thanks for stopping by!

Hello again!
Women's Gifts is this weekend and I'm pretty excited. Buffalo Spree did a write up about the show in their Forever Young paper... which is for senior citizens so I hope the 50+ crowd of B'lo likes monsters! I'm featured! It was really awesome to open up a paper and see pictures of my work. Really, it made my day! Click HERE to read the article on foreveryoungwny.com.
